On my mind...

I haven't blogged in a while mostly because nothing out of the ordinary has happened-- but I thought I'd write a little bit about what's been on my mind lately...and maybe get some advice.
#1) Will someone please tell me that there is a cure for whining!! and why it is that whining, above any other noise ever, makes me feel like I could loose total control and turn into demon mommy?!? Okay, now that THAT is out of my system...aren't my kids adorable? They put on their aprons yesterday (Thanks Aunt Becca!!) and helped me make cookies...

I'm not sure what's with the goofy faces...but we sure made some great cookies. Which brings me to #2, I swore off treats on January first thinking it would help me look skinny for out cruise coming up...so yes, I think about treats a lot...I still haven't eaten ANY (except for one tiny peppermint patty on an especially rough day) and I can't wait until our cruise so I can forget all about this goal!!

That is why this picture represents torture!! and there it sits on the counter all day long! (yes, I know that it's my fault...) So, back to the cruise-- we leave in 2 weeks!! and I can't wait! Thanks again Mom for watching the kids!! And now I need some advice from experienced cruisers...this is our first one, so any tidbit will help (what to bring, what to do, what NOT to do, etc.)

#3) Hailey is THE BEST baby ever. I can't get enough!! She has slept from 7:30pm to 7am this whole week!! Thank you Hailey- I LOVE YOU!

#4) Projects- I have SO many projects on my mind all the time...mostly I like to finish our basement in my mind, or get new counter tops for the kitchen in my mind...but here is a small project that actually came to fruition-- a changing table that our neighbors were getting rid of, now matchy-matchy with the rest of the girls' room (probably the only room I don't remodel in my mind).
#5) (I know it sounds cheesy!) I am so blessed. I started working for LDS Family Services again on Thursday evenings, and it always reminds me what a great life I have after spending hours with clients who are really struggling. Of course Kelly loves it when I work because I always come home raving about what a wonderful husband he is! A little perspective can do a lot for a girl!

Where are you going on your cruise? I went on a Caribbean cruise with my family in high school, and I was always a little motion sick. You won't have that problem, for sure!

Cute kids, cute projects, SUPER cute cookies--how can you have those on the counter without tearing into them??????? You have amazing self-control, my friend.

I'm still waiting for the good advice. I'm a bit nervous about the motion sickness issue too.

Whinning and back talking both drive me bonkers.

Oh yes, I can think of plenty of fun things we can do kidless.

I feel your pain with the whining... but the kiddos are sooo cute and the cookies too!

Have an AWESOME time on your cruise... my advice would be to have fun, but keep a chill pace... get your share of relax time in! :)

BTW.. where are you headed?

Okay, here are some suggestions for dealing with whining that I've used on my students. The basic idea is to ignore the behavior you don't want and accentuate/reward the behavior you do want.

Say:

"You'll never get what you want from me when you whine. Ever."

"Can you try that again without whining?"

"I can't hear you when you whine."

Also try: "If you choose to whine, you'll have to go to your room."

Alternatively, let them know ahead of time that you will do your best to ignore them when they whine. When they use an appropriate tone of voice, acknowledge them and praise them profusely. This is especially important because it reinforces the behavior that you want. The more you can catch them doing what you want, the more they'll do it. At least in theory. ;P

Good luck!

They sell herbal supplements with ginger and such that are supposed to help with motion sickness. You might want to take a bottle with you. I think I also got dehydrated, so that was probably part of the problem.

Dramamine! Best motion sickness cure ever, you can be sure i'm bringing some. I always thought the cure for whining was yelling...oh wait, that isn't working...

I love you and your children!!! I miss you all quite terribly!! Hailey is looking so grown up, she is so cute in that picture! Mom is sending me a web cam so we will have to video chat pretty much as soon as it comes!!
I can't wait!!

I agree with "paws" about the whining...my best tool with whining is to remove them from my space (go to their own room) OR simply say," I will not talk about this until you can talk in a nice voice. Whining is not a nice way to talk to anyone."

So, onto bigger and better discussions...the cruise. My advice, which was passed down from my mother-in-law when I went on a cruise, is to take a 24 hr. dramamine (for motion sickness) every morning, even if you do not feel sick. The reason: if you start to feel sick, you will have a really hard time feeling better when you are constantly in motion.

Concern #1 with this advice is that I was SUPER high strung on dramamine. Like, up-at-the-crack- of-dawn and super-fast-talking.
Concern #2 is that my brother-in-law felt really tired, even though it is supposed to be non-drowsy medicine.

maybe you could test it out one day before you leave?

Annie - there is a cure for whining. We didn't have much whining in our house, but I'm not sure the price isn't too steep. Remember when you told me, "I'm going to marry someone who's fun!" well, maybe some of the fun went out of me trying to limit the whining. So, you should probably just keep on keeping on because you're doing a GREAT JOB and appear to be having a lot of fun (what's a little whining in the long run?)! I love you. Dad
